“Donor” is a bit of science fiction. When I started writing it, I assumed it would be like the other stories in this blog–you know, up to four or five “parts.” (A “part” is simply “Oh hey, this is how much I wrote of it today…”) As of this Page posting, I’m up to Part 10 and rethinking the “part” system, if only for this story.
I came up with this concept a while back, although I couldn’t tell you exactly when. It was sometime in 2008, and that’s all I remember. I don’t even remember what inspired this story. The closest I can come to a source is that I was trying to come up with “hard sci-fi” ideas. It would be great to get a story into Analog, which focuses on hard sci-fi. Most of the things I thought of were already done in one form or another. It’s difficult to be original in a field where there’s a proliferation of originality… and a proliferation of copycats.
